When “Sick Days” Aren’t Really About Being Sick: Autistic Teen Burnout

When my son started high school, there were days he was suddenly “sick.”

Headaches. Stomach aches. Exhaustion.

On other days, he had “forgotten” to bring home his homework.

Sometimes he would quietly leave the classroom during school hours.

From the outside, it could have looked like avoidance.

It wasn’t.

He was experiencing overwhelm.

High School Is a Big Shift

For many autistic teenagers, high school brings:

• Larger social environments
• Louder classrooms
• Increased academic load
• Less structure
• Greater executive functioning demands

Even capable, intelligent students can begin to struggle.

Not because they don’t care.
Not because they aren’t trying.
But because the load has tipped beyond what is sustainable.

What Burnout Can Look Like

Burnout in autistic teens often shows up as:

• Increased “sick days”
• Homework avoidance
• Emotional shutdown
• Withdrawal after school
• Reduced tolerance for everyday demands

It can be gradual.

And it can be confusing for parents who know their child is capable.

When It’s Not About Motivation

Often, the issue isn’t effort.

It’s cognitive load.
It’s sensory load.
It’s sustained pressure.

And once the nervous system is overloaded, even small tasks can feel impossible.

Where Occupational Therapy Can Help

Occupational therapy doesn’t increase pressure.

It helps reduce load.

Support may include:

• Identifying energy drains
• Adjusting expectations
• Building executive functioning supports
• Creating realistic routines
• Developing regulation strategies

The goal is to reduce the load so daily life feels manageable.

A Note for Parents

If you’re noticing patterns like these in your teenager, you’re not alone.

High school transitions can reveal just how much effort has been happening behind the scenes.

Occupational therapy can bring relief, support, and strategies for coping and moving forward.

If you can relate and need support, contact Neurodivergence Occupational to book an appointment in Hervey Bay, Queensland, or via telehealth across Australia.
